WHAT IS A
NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL?

LOCAL ADVOCACY

The City of Los Angeles charter was amended in 1999 to form 99 Neighborhood Councils (NC). The purpose of the NC's is to give community members the chance to have input on decisions that affect their quality of life and the services received by City departments. While each neighborhood creates their own unique NC they all elect board members who manage an annual budget of $32,000 in public funds.

THE BEST PART!

Everyone can participate. Any stakeholder in the neighborhood, resident, worker, or business owner can create impact. Choose a way to contribute that works for you:
  • Serve as a board member
  • Serve on a committee
  • Volunteer on NC projects
  • Attend meetings and make suggestions

THE BOARD MEMBERS

SERVING FROM  2023-2025

The Westlake South Neighborhood Council (WSNC) is currently led by seven volunteer board members elected to two year terms. Each board member agrees to attend monthly meetings to vote on motions important to neighborhood stakeholders, serve on committees, and work on NC projects. There are two vacancies on the board. All that is required to serve now and vote on motions at monthly meetings is to submit an application.

THE BYLAWS

GOVERNING DOCUMENT

The Westlake South Neighborhood Council (WSNC) is obligated to follow all applicable state law and municipal codes when conducting business on behalf of constituents. However, how the NC is structured and conducts it's activities - we decide that. The WSNC official Bylaws are regularly amended and ratified by the board members with input by neighborhood stakeholders. The Bylaws were last ratified on November 12, 2020.
